Affiliate marketing is one of my favorite ways to make money online. There is more than one way to make thousands of dollars and some works better than the others.

One of the most powerful ways to increase your earning is through Pinterest. It is one of the most popular social bookmarking platforms with more than 175 million users online. In fact, they are the fastest growing site in the history of the Internet. It continues to grow in respect to referrals as well, which is what affiliate marketers after – conversions.

Pinterest did not allow its users to include affiliate links due to spamming issues. After upgrading their spam detection feature, Pinterest once again allows you to use affiliate links again on the platform.

As an affiliate marketer, you can make money effectively on Pinterest by leveraging the traffic. Your “Pins” and “Boards” actually have the capabilities to get ranked in the search engines too.

If you haven’t been active on Pinterest, you are probably missing out a good deal of opportunity.

This article is going to show you the step-by-step how to make money on Pinterest effectively.

1. Create an account with Pinterest

At first, it might seem a bit complex, but I promise that it’s fairly simple. It only takes 15 seconds to sign up for a Pinterest account where they just need the basic information such as who you are. You can sign up with your Facebook account.

Your profile is composed of 5 main areas:

  1. Your logo – If your logo is very plain, you might want to create a custom image instead.
  2. Your brand name – It should reflect your business, but you could also use a personal account with your name.
  3. Your website URL
  4. A description – A one- or two-line description that explains what you do.
  5. Boards – These boards act as silos for the content you share on Pinterest (your pins are kept inside, depending on how you tag them). You should create a board for each category of images you plan to share.

2. Create a Pinterest Board

Pinterest boards are buckets of categorized content. Each one contains content with similar interests.

For example, one board might be “Facebook Marketing” while another captures content surrounding “Pinterest Tips for Newbies”.

As an affiliate (social) marketer, it is important to create boards that encourage the audience to follow your brand and find out more. Try to focus on things that are specific to what makes your brand unique, rather than creating random, generic boards.

Go to your profile, and you will see “Boards”, “Pins” and “Likes”.

The “Create board” appears and click on it. You will be prompted a box where you will need to enter the basic information about your board: the name, and whether you want to make it a Secret Boards. In our case, we would like to reach out to our audience and you should make sure it is a “No” under the “Secret” option. Then, click Create Board.

As you’re creating a board, it doesn’t have a spot for a description. After you create your board, click the Edit Board button in the top-middle of your board and add a description. This isn’t necessary, but it does appear at the top of the page when someone visits your board.

Naming your boards is an important step as they should be searchable. Namings shall be based on your keywords, terms or phrases. An advice from Pinterest reads the following:-

To surface your boards on Pinterest’s board search, use meaningful names that Pinners are likely to search for. Have a mix of both boards with specific names (e.g. “Salvador Dali Prints”) and more broad ones (e.g. “Fine Art Prints”). Don’t forget to write compelling and targeted descriptions of your boards, too, and add to them frequently to keep your followers engaged and to make your boards easier to discover.

Hence, just like any SEO keywords you use in your website, each one should be used in an organic way to describe the content found on your boards.

To rank higher in Boards search results for specific keywords, place them as close to the beginning of your title as possible.

So rather than simply including an affiliate link with your pin, try to write a description with relevant and useful information about your experience and/or opinion. Not only could it influence a purchase but it will also help your pins to be searched for more easily by users.

3. Pin and Share Content

When creating your own pins, you can increase the chances of showing up in Pins search results by including the keywords you want to be found for as early as possible in the description of your pin.

If you wonder what normally people search on Pinterest, you simply need to type words related to your industry in the search box and popular suggestions automatically pop up.

Keep your keyword descriptions short and simple to show up in relevant search results.

Pinning regularly can help people discover your pins and increase the number of followers you have on Pinterest.

As you begin to think about content, remember this: you want to share your own content, but you also want to make it a point to share other people’s content!

Tips for Finding & Pinning Great Content

  • Search a specific keyword or phrase in Pinterest
  • Pin your evergreen blog content
  • Take newsletter tips & turn them into quote graphics
  • Use your RSS reader to add your favorite blogs & actively pin their content
  • Visit sites like BizSugar.com to find new content relevant to your audience

4. Create Awesome Pins

If you really want people to click on your pins and possibly drive web traffic to your affiliate links, the best thing is to make sure that your pins are as attractive as possible.

Graphics matter on social media, and especially on Pinterest. It is crucial to choose the images of the products you want to share carefully.

Remember that over 80% of Pinterest’s daily traffic comes from mobile, so ensure that your graphics are mobile optimized. For example, if you use images with writing, make sure the fonts are readable, even on a smaller screen.

If you have no idea how to edit your photos, you can use iPiccy. It is one of the most popular free online photo editors that is easy to navigate and use, especially those who are not familiar with photo editing.

PicMonkey is very user-friendly as it allows you to do cropping, resizing and adding borders.

When it comes to wording, you can try Recite. It allows you to transform any quote into a Pinterest-worthy image in a matter of seconds!

Simply type in your quote, scroll through the bottom section to find the design you like best, and then post your selected design directly to Pinterest from Recite’s site.

That’s it: super simple, super cool.

Infographics is also a type of images that can drive a lot of traffic to your website or affiliated programs.

There’s no better way to summarize a lot of complex information in one image than an infographic.

A well-made infographic will drive traffic from Pinterest for years as it will continue to get repins and likes over time.

The tool that I would recommend here is Easel.ly. It is an awesome free creation tool that guides users to build visual and text representations of a concept or idea.

It provides some themes and many objects, but it is up to the user to search through these materials and organize them into a cohesive infographic.

Just as the name implies Easel.ly is quite easy and has a fairly minimalist user interface with 6 buttons that are self-explanatory:

  • Vhemes (templates)
  • Objects
  • Backgrounds
  • Shapes
  • Text
  • Upload

Many of the buttons will offer up more options when clicked, which could become overwhelming due to the volume of options, but it never ventures into the land of obscurity but maintains a clean and effective workflow that is not only graphic-based but straight forward.

5. Add Affiliate Product Pins to Your Boards

First, choose the product or service that you want to share and decide which board you’ll pin it to. For example, if you have an affiliate link for Bitcoin, you can pin it to a board full of Bitcoin wallets, cloud mining companies or some ways to increase Bitcoin earning.

After you pin the product, click the Edit button on the pin and replace the original link in the Website box with your affiliate link.

Click Save and your pin is live with your affiliate link! Rinse and repeat these steps with other products.

Tips to increase traffic and more followers on Pinterest

# Following and Being Followed

In order to get people to follow you, you need to make some sort of connection with them.

It could be through commenting on their pins or sharing their pins, but the simplest and most scalable option is to follow other users.

When you follow another user, they get a notification. Most of the time, they will check out your profile.

Depending on how good your profile is and how well you pick the people you follow, 1-10% of them will follow you back.

A lot of your success will be determined by whom you follow. If you run an account about home decorating but follow football fans, you’ll get a terrible follow-back rate.

# Social Warfare Plugin for WordPress

If you are a blogger or an affiliate marketer that owns a website. You should consider having Social Warfare on your plugin list.

Social Warfare allows you to have the Pinterest share button pop up when you hover over any images you select. Perfect for bloggers who have many optimized images in their posts.

Furthermore, Social Warfare has this special feature that allows you to include a separate image that your readers can pin the Pinterest “friendly” image directly on their boards.

As we all know, site speed matters in SEO. Many people have found faster pages rank and convert better. Google has hinted that site speed is one of the factors that they use to determine rank.

Unlike other social media share counts provider, Social Warfare calls the API for the share counts of your pages and posts on a predetermined schedule and cache the results in the database. That simply means the sharing buttons load faster than your pages once they are clicked.

Conclusion

If you are consistent with the process, I am sure you will be driving a lot of traffic to your site or affiliated programs.

Most importantly, you will have a lot of fun and discover a lot of new things from this community.

It’s great to learn more about how to be successful on Pinterest. I have one question about the affiliate links because I tried to add one just now and it doesn’t recognize it: “Sorry! We blocked this link because it may lead to spam”.
Did they change it only for just a few affiliates? Could you give examples of the ones that work?
Thanks again for sharing this post.

      Hi Dira,

Per the rules, you can’t use link cloakers on Pinterest, and that includes Amazon’s own short link. Be sure to grab the “full link.” Try it and let me know if it works.

Thanks for this information, it is much needed for me! You’ve convinced me that I need to figure out this Pinterest thing lol. I’ve never messed with it but it seems like a great way to get people to view your website and get traffic. Question, a lot of times in affiliate marketing we use other websites images, since we are recommending their products of course. Would we be able to put these on Pinterest?

    • Alex Y says:

      Hi Daniel,

Most companies issue marketing materials, which their partners, sellers, and press can make use of. Contact their marketing folks and check. Taking an image from another website to use on your own website to sell goods, even if it is their goods, would violate copyright.

The affiliate interface makes it clear which photo you can use and gives its direct URL. On Amazon it says ‘save this image to your server’ when they do not want to be hot-linked.

      I hope it helps.

      Alex

Pinterest is a must-have for any serious blogger. I use it on my site and find that it drives a good level of traffic to my articles.

Your step-by-step guide on getting started is illustrated very well. I would recommend that anyone not using Pinterest should do so and take advantage of an extra stream of traffic.

But even from a non-commercial perspective, I find that its better than Facebook as it gives me ideas for things like food recipes, fitness and renovations etc.

Is Social Warfare mainly for use with Pinterest or does it work just as good with other social platforms?

    • Alex Y says:

Hi Cheryl. Social Warfare works perfectly with other social platforms too. Just to highlight to you, just in case you have just change your domain from HTTP to HTTPS, you probably lost your social counts. Social Warfare can retrieve your old social counts too.
